The Philippines has suspended government functions and closed schools. The central bank has also prohibited foreign currency due to Tropical Storm Trami, which is approaching the east coast of Luzon, the country's main island.
Trami's core was last estimated to be 180 kilometers (112 miles) off the central town of Virac in Catanduanes province, according to a 5 a.m. (2100 GMT) alert from official weather forecaster Pag-Asa.
Pag-asa also warned that coastal communities along the typhoon's route will endure strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surges.
